Commercial energy procurement

Make renewal a strategy, not a deadline

We move your business away from the “renewal trap” by securing rates up to 24 months in advance.

Our procurement frameworks combine wholesale market intelligence with energy tender management. Flexible tranches and portfolio consolidation help shape purchasing around market opportunities and your appetite for risk.

  • Review the total contract cost, not just the headline price per kWh.
  • Consider purchasing in stages and coordinating contracts across your portfolio.
  • Balance budget certainty with the terms and flexibility your business needs.

Forensic energy auditing

What to expect from energy audit firms

A useful audit connects the contract, the meter data and the invoice. Our forensic energy audit examines your last six years of data to investigate overcharges, undisclosed energy broker commissions and hidden fees.

Our energy bill validation also scrutinises TNUoS and DUoS charges. Where the evidence identifies money owed to your business, we pursue recovery rather than leaving the discrepancy unexplained.

For Derby firms planning an audit in 2026, and businesses elsewhere in the UK, these eight checks provide a practical starting point.

Eight checks that can reveal avoidable costs

  • Contract rates: compare invoiced unit prices with agreed terms.
  • Meter readings: distinguish actual usage from estimates.
  • Billing periods: check for overlapping dates or duplicate invoices.
  • Standing charges: reconcile recurring costs with the contract.
  • Broker fees: examine commissions and how they were disclosed.
  • Network charges: review the basis of TNUoS and DUoS costs.
  • Capacity: compare agreed supply capacity with site requirements.
  • Consumption patterns: investigate unexplained peaks and out-of-hours loads.

Business energy efficiency

See what your meter alone cannot explain

Our real-time efficiency monitoring goes beyond a standard smart meter. IoT sub-metering and AI-powered predictive analytics help build a “Digital Twin”, a data-led representation of how your site uses energy.

This helps identify ghost loads, equipment drawing power when it is not needed, and peak-shaving opportunities that reduce periods of high demand.

Measure before you change

Establish a baseline, investigate unusual consumption and compare results after changes. Account for operating hours, production and weather so that apparent savings stand up to scrutiny.

Net Zero & ESG roadmap

Build a credible route to lower emissions

We support ESOS Phase 4 compliance and SECR reporting, with verified carbon baselining and Solar PV assessments to inform your investment decisions.

A useful roadmap connects decarbonisation with operational priorities. It should explain what is measured, which actions are proposed and how progress will be assessed, rather than relying on broad sustainability claims.

Bills, terminology and support explained

Understand the language behind a quote, the evidence behind an environmental claim and what to do when something needs attention.

What do the main business energy terms mean?

kWh: a kilowatt-hour, the unit used to measure energy consumed. The unit rate is the price charged for each kWh.

Standing charge: a recurring charge separate from consumption. kVA: a measure of apparent power used when describing electricity supply capacity.

Deemed contract: terms that can apply when you use a supply without agreeing a contract, for example after moving into premises. Tranche purchasing: buying portions of your energy requirement at different times.

What are TNUoS and DUoS charges?

TNUoS stands for Transmission Network Use of System, relating to the high-voltage transmission network. DUoS stands for Distribution Use of System, relating to local distribution networks. How these costs appear depends on your contract and supply arrangements. For a 2026 bill review, check the applicable charging period, site classification and whether costs are included in your rate or passed through separately.

How should we compare business energy suppliers in 2026?

The right supplier depends on your consumption, meter setup, contract preferences and service needs. Compare total costs, payment arrangements, renewal terms and any pass-through charges rather than relying on a supplier ranking. Our business energy comparison guidance and British Gas Business Energy review offer further context.

Can we use our 2025 energy costs to plan ahead?

Your 2025 bills provide a useful starting point for consumption and budgeting, but they are not a current quotation. Separate usage changes from price changes, and account for occupancy, operating hours and production. Compare new offers using the same consumption assumptions and check which charges may vary during the contract.

What do REGO certificates tell a business?

Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, or REGOs, evidence the renewable origin of electricity generation. They support supplier fuel-mix disclosures, but do not mean the electricity physically reaching your premises comes only from renewable sources. Ask what evidence backs a tariff and distinguish renewable purchasing from reducing your actual energy consumption.

What should we prepare for an energy review?

Start with recent bills, current contracts, renewal dates, meter information and any correspondence about disputed charges. For forensic auditing, gather historical records covering the last six years where available. Tell us about planned moves, new equipment or changes in operating hours so the review reflects your business.

How do I raise a complaint?

Please contact Kilowatt Energy with your business name, the issue, relevant dates, supporting documents and the outcome you would like. Keep copies of the correspondence and ask us for the applicable complaints procedure and escalation options. If an energy complaint remains unresolved, eligibility for independent review by the Energy Ombudsman depends on the circumstances and scheme rules.
